Choosing your cosmetic/plastic surgeon is personal yet very important decision one has to make before taking the plunge. There are several critical factors to consider when searching.
Reviewing Cosmetic Plastic Surgeons
1. Board Certified or Not?
Anyone can call themselves a “plastic surgeon” even non MDs – (DOs or Doctors of Osteopathy, as they are commonly referred to are allowed to practice cosmetic surgery). What is the person’s reputation, his/her background? Are they Plastic Surgery Board Certified? Are they a specialist or just a Dermatologist, General Surgeon, Dentist, EENT Surgeon practicing plastic surgery. Certain types of Plastic Surgery require very specialized training and certification. So ask these questions.
2. Get Referrals
Begin your review of plastic surgeons by asking friends, relatives, family doctor, colleagues that are willing to meet with you and share their results of the surgery. You may also want to look at our cosmetic surgery forum to see what others are saying about their experiences.
3. Meet with the Plastic Surgeon – in-person preferably
Discuss the procedures you are considering in great detail and ask what is involved in the procedure. Always be clear about what risks are involved, how long it will take to heal, and what outcomes you can expect. The most important thing is to feel comfortable speaking to the plastic surgeon and that the answers you receive are thoughtful and thorough.
4. Be Careful of the Marketing Maverick – Sorting through the hype
You may check for online plastic surgeon reviews or reviews of cosmetic surgeons, but be very careful of internet savvy doctors- because even though they are “all over the place” doesn’t mean they’re the best – they could just be the best at marketing themselves.
