What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast Augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase the size of the breasts and it is achieved by the insertion of a breast implant at the back the breast tissue or on top of the breast muscle. The implant that is used is available in various sizes and shapes. There are also are a variety of designs; the materials from which these implants are made also varies.
Candidates for Breast Augmentation
The reasons why women seek Breast Augmentation varies and below is a list of some of those reasons.
- If they have small breasts as a result of genetics.
- When the breasts are not same in size or shape.
- Breast reconstrunction as a result of breast cancer. If the breast has been removed partially or removed in the course of the cancer treatment.
- When the breast loses its firmness as a result of aging.
- Sagging of breasts that are associated with breast feeding.
To have a breast augmentation, the woman must be emotionally prepared through the understanding of what the procedure will be like. The woman must also be in good health, be on a diet that is healthy and have an active physical life.
Procedures involved in Breast Augmentation
The goal of the breast augmentation is to increase breast size and yet retain that natural look. The surgical procedure takes place in a surgical theater and the procedure is as follows:
- The surgery usually takes 1 to 2 hours.
- Incisions are made in four places - below the breast, in the region of the nipple, armpit and the naval area.
- A pocket is made and the breast implant is placed.
- The implant can be placed in one of three positions - above, behind or partially at the back of the breast muscles.
The size of the incision to be made is often determined by the size of the breast implant. It is also dependent on the body frame and the size of the breast tissue. For those with sagging breasts, they should note that breast augmentation cannot help their problem. What they require is a breast lift. So depending on what the patient wants, Breast Augmentation/implant can be accompanied with a breast lift.
Types of Breast Implant
Silicon/gel implant or the Saline implants are the available choices of breast implants. In the case of saline, the material used for the implant contains saline water. Any rupture on the implant will lead to the water being expelled from the implant and absorbed into the body. This will lead to a reduction in breast size and will require another surgery to correct. For the Silicone, the material in the implant is a cohesive gel that will not be absorbed by the body if it ruptures. Should there be a rupture, the gel will stick together and avoid a reduction in breast size. It's important to note that if a silicone breast implant shoudl rupture it needs to be removed and or be replaced.
Risks involved with Breast Implants
Like every surgery there are risks involved. The risks in breast augmentation include clotting of the blood, infection and scarring amongst others.
Recovery from Breast Augmentation
After the surgery, you will notice bruises, a sore feeling around the breast and swelling. You will be required to wear surgical bra for days. You should avoid lifting heavy materials or whatever it is that will cause your breast any pressure until you fully recover.
