Juvederm
What Is Juvederm?
Juvederm is one of the newer forms of injectable fillers that are used for reduction of wrinkles and the softening of deep folds on the face. It is used by Plastic, Dermatological and Cosmetic Surgeons. The primary use of juvederm is to remove nasolabial folds otherwise dubbed ‘smile lines’ that run from the nose to corners of the mouth. The substance used is hyaluronic acid to clear the creases on the skin. This is normally found in the muscles, skin or tendons of all mammals. This kind of injectable fillers was approved in June 2006, and is used as filler for Lip Augmentation and fill in hollow places in the face. The fillers are absorbed by the body for a period of 6-9 months. This means that to keep the youthful look you would need to have injections repeatedly. Juvederm is also used by physicians and surgeons to reduce the effects of aging.
Procedure
Juvederm is a filler that is very good for plastic and cosmetic surgery. The reason is the hyaluronic acid that is in the filler can absorb up to 1,000 units of water beyond its own weight. This ensures that the skin will have more volume underneath the surface of the area that may be sagging. The hyaluronic acid works with elastin and collagen in a harmonious manner that results in an attractive and more youthful appearance. The collagen and elastin add more nutrients to the skin.
To begin the procedure the surgeon first runs some tests to check for the level of the wrinkles, the elasticity of the skin and determines the areas that need filling most. After this is done the area to be filled is then lubricated with an ointment to reduce pain. The juvederm injectable filler is then added to the skin. The procedure does not take too long because there is no need for incisions to be made on the skin.
Risks and side effects
As with all surgeries the juvederm procedure also has some risks associated with it. These risks have been attested by doctors and patients who have gone through the procedure. Some of these are:
- Facial lumps i.e. ‘Granulomas.’
- Temporary redness.
- Bruising of the skin.
- Tenderness of skin that comes as a result of the injections.
- If you are hypertensive you are advised to seek medical attention.
Post treatment care and benefits
You should go for regular checkups. This would ensure that you don’t have sudden reactions and the doctor can give you things to take care of any reactions that may occur.
Results
The end results of Juvederm are not permanent and would require a touch up of the procedure to maintain that youthful look. The procedure might have to be redone after 5 or 6 months.
